Ray Swales has been helping PPL, CPL, and ATP students to get through their ground-school exams for 20 years. As the owner of Rand Flight Center flying school, he gave PPL ground-school lessons, and in 1988 he started to lecture at CPL and ATP level for a range of commercial ground schools.

As an IT specialist in a past life, it was a natural progression to develop the Flying School Test Center computer based PPL examination system in an effort to improve the quality of the exams. He then went on to offer this system to other flying schools where 70 schools now make use of over 100 workstations. This system became the CAA’s recommended method of examining students as documented in AIC 30.8 of 04-12-24.

July 2007 brought about a different set of circumstances, when the CAA implemented their online exam system. The new standard was a shock, not only the students but also to the flying schools responsible for teaching them. It caused the flying schools to think deeply about how to raise their standard of teaching as well as how to assess the student’s readiness to take the, now expensive, exams. As an answer, many schools turned to the Swales Test Center system which was in the throes of a major standards upgrade.

The first move made by Ray was to obtain JAR standard questions to cover the new syllabus. Then, with the aid of flying schools and students a series of feedback channels were developed which were intended to ensure that all the topics which might be found in the CAA exams were thoroughly covered.

The end result is an exam system which is truly representative of the CAA exams. A system which can be used by the flying schools to vet the students prior to sending them to, what has been described as, the slaughter of the CAA system.

The resulting database of questions has been released in the Mock PPL version which can be purchased at all the Pilot shops as well as many flying schools. It can also be downloaded here from the products page, along with the Mock CPL.

The Mock CPL has helped many students to gain their commercial licence for many years.
